Madam Marci Walker

Madam Marci Walker’s credentials are nothing short of exceptional. Having studied hair braiding both in the U.S. and Africa, Marci continues to be a much sought after instructor, author, and television personality. Just recently, Madam Walker was invited by Child and Family Services to teach a seminar in "African American Children’s Hair Care" for foster and adoptive parents. Other achievements include an invitation to co-author a book on Natural Hair Care, a nomination for ABC’s "Working Woman of the Year 2000" award, and a featured article about Madam Walker’s Braidery in Sally’s Beauty Supply magazine.

Shanti Walker holds his vision for the salon he co-owns with his mother as his mantra "To have people everywhere equate our names with "natural hair care professionals." Shanti admits he’s converted from the use of chemicals to a broad-based practice of natural hairstyles for both men and women. "When the hair is natural, untreated by chemicals, it is at its strongest.

MWB Mission statement:

"To enhance the natural beauty of women and men of color. To educate and prepare our clients to maintain and care for their own hair between visits.

We’d like to empower women and men who were heretofore left out of the "American Dream" by sharing our skills thru the Art of Braiding course. What we teach at Prince George’s Community College is a basic level course which not only exposes our students to the technical side of African hair manipulation, but to the history, science and financial side of braiding, locking as well as the social, religious and cultural implications of wearing and grooming hair in its natural state.

Cosmetologists, Professional Stylists and Braiders who wish to take their skills to the next level of excellence would benefit from taking our Advance Braiding and Natural Hair Classes. Each class is given four times a year at "The Braid Extension School" located in our salon.

We give HONOR, PRAISE, and THANKS to the LORD for our understanding and for the opportunity to share our GIFTS with you."

About five years ago, Shanti taught himself to braid by watching his mother. His specialty is in creating hair for those who have lost their natural hair as a result of illness, medications or, most common, scar tissue from chemical burns. Relaxers which haven't been done properly may cause scars, which when untreated, will form scar tissue. Hair cannot grow through scar tissue.

The Walkers make an awesome team. Yet for them, the proverbial "road to success" has seen its share of adversity. What sustained them through all the hardships is their strong faith in God. It enables them to support each other's dreams. Shanti confides, "My vision is to have people everywhere equate our names with 'natural hair care professionals."

NEW: LOK KAPPS by Shanti

Created and designed by Shanti, the LOK KAPP is a lightweight, fitted cap. The hair on the KAPP is either synthetic or human. Each KAPP is individually styled, cut, and colored by hand. LOK KAPPs come in various colors, lengths, and styles and can be customized for the individual. They are the perfect LOCK alternative for those not ready to commit to LOCKS, in transition from chemicals, or suffering from hair loss. Styles include Corn Row, Two Strand, Spiked, Rhasta, Pony Tail, Streaked, Sun Bleached and more.
